Wordguile
During the month of September 2010, I embarked on an exploration of how I can use different media to convey meaning. I have been interested in vocabulary for a long time and the proper usage, or misusage, of a word wields incredible power. Project Wordguile was an exercise for me to do a number of things:
- Expand my own vocabulary - Some of these words were not completely new, but weren't ones that I had a firm grasp on. I wanted to be able to use and manipulate these words in normal conversation.
- Explore different media for conveying messages - Experience is a great teacher, so how can I help someone experience these words for themselves. I sought to do this through traditional graphic design, video, short story, photography, and anything else that came to mind.
- Push my own creative boundaries - It was my goal to produce a new word every day. That meant that ideas were valued over execution, but execution still had to happen. I had to pump something out every day, which meant I had to work hard to find a new way to say something. You can't do the same thing every day - that's called boring. In the end, I was moving out of the country in the beginning of October, so maybe I chose a bad month to do this. I was able to do 27 out of the possible 30 Wordguiles.
- Limit myself typographically - Typography is a big part of communicating words, but rather than being typographically promiscuous, my goal was to learn more about a few of the typefaces I already had. In the end I was able to become much more familiar with a handful of typefaces living.
